It is our great pleasure to announce the 2024 Symposium for the Ageing Well National Science Challenge: ‘The Ageing Well Journey: from vision to reality | Ka mua ka muri’.
At this event, we will focus both on the achievements of the Challenge over the last decade as well as on the future of ageing in Aotearoa New Zealand.
The Symposium will be an opportunity to connect with and recognise our community and research partners who have engaged with and contributed to the kaupapa of Ageing Well over its 10-year duration. It will also provide a forum to deliver key messages about the Challenge’s successes and future opportunities to a diverse audience.
In the room, there will be a mix of decision-makers, partners, researchers, community advocates, and others involved in the care and support of older people.
We hope these conversations about how New Zealanders can age well will continue, and that the Symposium will provide a valuable opportunity to facilitate future collaborations and networking.
The keynote speaker at this Symposium is notable economist Dr Ganesh Nana.
Dr Nana is formerly the chair of the New Zealand Productivity Commission Te Kōmihana Whai Hua o Aotearoa and worked for 22 years at the consultancy Business and Economics Research Limited (BERL).
Ganesh is a first-generation New Zealander of Indian ethnicity, raised in Whakatiki Upper Hutt. Ganesh acknowledges Māori as Tangata Whenua of Aotearoa. Ganesh lives with his partner in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington.
An economist by trade, Ganesh has accumulated more than 40 years of experience and knowledge during a professional career that has ranged from academia, to consulting, to public service. Ganesh is a polished presenter, with experience across conference, hui, workshop, and board audiences. He has also been sought after by media for commentary across a variety of economic and social topics.
Despite his passion for numbers, Ganesh believes economics is distinct from money and finance, and prefers a framing centred on whakapapa, whenua, whai hua – people, place, and value. Economics is about nurturing, protecting, maintaining, and improving the resources (whakapapa, whenua, people, and place) that we all individually and collectively rely on to produce and deliver the goods and services we value and are valued. In doing so, we enable people to contribute through jobs providing incomes, opportunities, and futures – whether through the market or the non-market economy.
As part of our commitment to equity in ageing, Ageing Well has dedicated the financial resources to ensure this event is FREE for attendees.

Join us on the Wellington waterfront for two days of thought-provoking, practical, and aspirational discussions about how we can help all New Zealanders age well.
As part of our commitment to support Early Career Researchers (ECRs) and the growth of the research workforce, we are offering scholarships for ECRs to attend our Symposium. This includes Honours and Masters students, PhD students, postdocs, and community researchers.
Ageing Well will provide the opportunity to sponsor five ECRs at our Symposium (up to $1,400 each) to cover any travel and accommodation costs involved in attending the event. For those who are Wellington-based, we would still encourage you to apply.
